Sioux Rapids Man Receives Prison Sentence for Stealing from a Business in the Community During Flood-Recovery Efforts

A Sioux Rapids man received a prison sentence this week in Buena Vista County District Court for stealing items from a Sioux Rapids business this past summer during flood-recovery efforts in the community.

According to the Buena Vista County Attorney’s Office, 57-year-old Jose Antonio Uribe-Garcia previously pleaded guilty in October to 3rd Degree Burglary, a class D felony. According to a criminal complaint, on the evening of July 6th, Uribe-Garcia entered Salon on Main in Sioux Rapids through an open door and took two mirrors valued at 500 dollars each. The salon mirrors were located in front of the business in the trunk of Uribe-Garcia’s vehicle. He was arrested that same evening.

Due to the nature of the offense, Uribe-Garcia’s criminal history, and other factors, he was sentenced to serve up to five years in prison at the Iowa Department of Corrections. The case was investigated by the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office. The State of Iowa was represented by BV County Attorney Paul Allen.

In a statement, the Buena Vista County Attorney’s Office says they will fully enforce the state’s criminal laws against those who seek to unlawfully exploit disasters and recovery efforts.
