The Storm Lake multicultural coalition SALUD resumed meeting last Friday, and presentations were given on a number of new community organizations and programs.
An update on mosaic murals was given by city council member Maria Ramos. She recently traveled to Mexico to connect with the artist responsible for multiple Storm Lake murals. The artist, Mary Carmen Olvera Trejo, has recently completed a major new mural, and has released a new book. It is hoped that she and her team can return to Storm Lake this fall to develop another work. A location has yet to be announced.
A Pohnpei and Pacific Connections of Iowa group is being developed based in Storm Lake. PPCD seeks to forge relationships and trust in the community, provide assistance with immigration paperwork, and more. One of the group’s efforts is the popular International Women’s Day celebration in Storm Lake.
SALUD is working toward a goal of an Immigrant Connection program for Storm Lake, patterned after one now in place in Sioux Center. The program would provide low-cost basic legal assistance such as dealing with forms. It’s hoped that a fundraiser gala will be held in December to help launch the effort.
The Fiesta Latina event will be held on Sunday, October 27th from 11am to 6pm at the Storm Lake Middle School.
SALUD will be meeting on a monthly basis going forward at the Buena Vista County Extension building in Storm Lake. Some meetings will be scheduled at various sites around the community to help learn about other cultures.
