Sac County Sheriff Ken McClure released a letter to citizens at the end of last week regarding the need for a new county jail.
McClure says the need for a new jail in Sac County is vital. He says Iowa Code encompasses 24 pages of jail facility requirements that the current jail cannot meet. According to the letter, the most recent jail inspection from July of this year noted “The Sac County Jail is an older facility that does not meet current needs of the prisoners, staff, or the public. The movement of the prisoners creates a serious liability and safety concern.”
Sac County voters will decide on a 10.9 million dollar bond issue for a new jail as part of the November 5th general election. McClure is asking Sac County citizens to not only make an investment in infrastructure, but also an investment in the safety and security of the entire community. McClure strongly encourages residents to attend upcoming town hall meetings throughout Sac County, as well as in-person jail tours. The dates and times for the events are currently being finalized, and will be made public when they are available.
