Sac County Sheriff Ken McClure this (Wed) morning released a statement regarding the failure of a public measure that would have allowed 10.9 million dollars in general obligation bonds to go toward construction of a new county jail.
The measure narrowly failed by 1.21 percent as part of the general election vote in Sac County. McClure says it has been his intention to provide transparency on the current state of the Sac County Jail, and the fiscal implications of what the future looks like to house inmates. McClure says they will continue to find a solution that is fiscally responsible and will mitigate liabilities for Sac County taxpayers. He says the sheriff’s department is grateful that the Board of Supervisors put the measure up for a public vote, and they are grateful for their support and commitment to the project. McClure says they will be reevaluating what their next steps will be in the days and weeks to come to ensure the ongoing safety of the community.
McClure previously stated that Iowa Code encompasses 24 pages of jail facility requirements that the current jail cannot meet. Sac County has the second oldest jail in the state behind only Pocahontas County, where a new jail is currently being constructed.
