Public Hearings Set for Two Storm Lake Animal Control Revisions; More Changes to be Made on Cats Ordinance

The Storm Lake City Council on Monday set public hearings for two of three sections of the city code about animal control, and further adjustments will be made on the third section.

Public hearings will be held on August 5th for sections regarding dangerous and vicious animals, and also for dogs. At the request of council member Maggie Martinez, the city agreed to specify language on dog licensing to read that it’s the law.

A public hearing for ordinance changes on cats failed on a 3-2 vote. The return/release part of the TNR ordinance was the main sticking point with a few of the council members, including Kevin McKinney…

Council member Meg McKeon responded…

Council member Martinez believes the biggest problem with the stray cat issue right now in Storm Lake is that nothing is being done.

McKinney and council members Matt Ricklefs and Maria Ramos all said the ordinance needs more clarification on options available regarding cats being returned to a property. The City will adjust that ordinance before a public hearing is set.
