Extra law enforcement officers are patrolling Iowa’s roadways through the Labor Day holiday to help keep impaired drivers off the roads.
A “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is being put on by the Iowa Department of Public Safety and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau now through Labor Day, Monday, September 5th.
According to the National Highway Traffic Administration, there were 530 traffic fatalities nationwide during the 2020 Labor Day holiday period. 46-percent of those fatalities involved drivers who had been drinking, and more than one-third of the fatalities involved drivers who were over the legal limit.
The Iowa Department of Transportation reports that seven fatalities occurred in the state over the Labor Day holiday period last year.
Individuals that plan on drinking are urged to designate a sober driver or use a ride service. Those that see a drunk driver behind the wheel on the road are encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
