Iowa Crops in a Bit Better Shape

The condition of Iowa’s crops is slightly better than a week ago.

The newest crop progress report from the USDA shows 60-percent of Iowa corn is rated good to excellent, a two-percent boost from last week. 59-percent of the state’s soybeans are considered good to excellent, a slight increase from a week ago. Corn and soybean development continues to be better than last year and the five-year average.

In northwest Iowa, 49-percent of topsoil is either short or very short of moisture, which is eight-percent higher than last week. 55-percent of subsoil in the area is lacking moisture, nine-percent more than a week ago.

Cool and dry weather in Iowa last week led to over six days being suitable for fieldwork, including 6.5 days in northwest Iowa.
