Ice Thickness Varies on Area Lakes

Ice is variable on area lakes, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Ice thickness is typically between three and eight inches. Some lakes in the area have pockets of open water, and thin areas that recently froze over. Citizens are urged to use caution if venturing out.

Ice is thicker on Storm Lake, with most ice between six and nine inches. Conditions are variable, with the usual thin areas/open water around the big island and ice seams.

At Black Hawk Lake in Lake View, ice thickness is around six inches off the Ice House Point boat ramp. The DNR report says other areas of the lake are much thinner, as they were open and recently froze over.
