City of Storm Lake Issues Reminder on Construction/Home Improvement Project Permits

The City of Storm Lake is reminding the public about construction permit regulations.

Permits are required for most home improvement projects in Storm Lake. The process helps to ensure that projects are done properly and safely. Permits must be on site before starting the project, so property owners should confirm with contractors that a permit has been received before work begins.

For more information on building permits, call 732-8002. The City follows national or international building, mechanical, plumbing, electric, fire safety, and energy conservation codes. Building permit applications are available at Storm Lake City Hall or online by clicking here.

A building permit is required in Storm Lake for the following common projects:

  • New buildings, dwellings
  • Additions & Alterations- egress windows, remodeling with structural changes
  • Demolition of all or part of a structure
  • Moving a structure
  • Wood decks and porches (repairs and replacements)
  • Roofing
  • Fence
  • Siding
  • Sheds
  • Garages and carports
  • Signs
  • Interior remodeling involving drywall, moving and/or building of walls, altering windows and/or doors 
  • Driveways, sidewalks, patios
  • Repair from fire or natural damages

A right-of-way permit is required when working in the city right-of-way – streets, alleys, parking or sidewalks.

Electrical or plumbing permits are required for the following projects:

  • Changing, relocating or altering the electrical service entrance
  • Rewiring a house or commercial building
  • Adding a new bath or changing locations of plumbing fixtures
  • Gas piping.
