Case of Bird Flu Confirmed in Sac County

A positive case of highly pathogenic avian influenza has been confirmed in a commercial turkey flock in Sac County.

Governor Reynolds today (Thur) authorized a disaster proclamation for Sac County effective immediately through July 20th. The proclamation allows state resources from Iowa Homeland Security, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, and other agencies to assist with tracking and monitoring rapid detection, containment, disposal, and disinfection. The proclamation also waives regulatory provisions related to commercial vehicles responding to affected sites.

The recent avian influenza detections in birds to not present an immediate public health concern, and it remains safe to eat poultry products. Producers are reminded to contact their veterinarian immediately if they suspect signs of bird flu in their flocks.
