Area law enforcement agencies are alerting residents of some suspicious letters that have been showing up in mailboxes recently.
The letters are sent by Iowa Workforce Development for unemployment claims and some may include correct information such as the last four digits of your social security number, current employer, and current wages. The letter asks the recipient to participate in a phone hearing to receive unemployment benefits and may include a warning of non-compliance of requirements for unemployment benefits. Authorities say the letters are being received due to fraudulent unemployment claims that were made on your behalf.
Law enforcement again reminds everyone to be cautious of unsolicited letters or phone calls regarding personal information. They also remind everyone to safeguard all of your personal information. It’s also recommended you engage in a credit monitoring service, either through your local bank or through trusted online sources such as Equifax, TransUnion, or Experian.
Law enforcement and Investigators with Iowa Workforce Development are investigating the letters.
