No action was taken by the Alta Aurelia School Board Monday night regarding the district’s library situation.
An Iowa law that passed during the recent legislative session bans books from school libraries that depict sex acts, and also bans books that aren’t “age appropriate.” The Alta Aurelia district’s library at the school building in Alta also acts as the city’s public library. To comply with the new law, the “school” and “public” sides of the library may need to be physically separated. The library could possibly end up being removed from the school building.
The district will continue to try and find a temporary solution until a final decision is made. A permanent solution will be sought, which may end up with the school district’s library agreement being dissolved, thus the City of Alta would need to find a new location for a library.
