Additional Charges Filed Against Woman Accused of Striking Young Child on a Bike

Additional charges have been filed against an Estherville woman accused of striking a young girl on her bike on June 9th in Ruthven, then fleeing the scene as the child’s bike was being dragged by her vehicle.

22-year-old Laticia Whiting was originally charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing serious injury, driving on the wrong side of the road, having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle and failure to provide financial liability. Authorities have now also charged Whiting with operating while intoxicated…1st offense and serious injury by vehicle.

The five year-old girl who was struck was identified by family members as Mackenzie Puterbaugh. They say she sustained a punctured lung and other injuries. She was taken to a Sioux Falls Hospital shortly after the incident and was released the next day.

Whiting was arrested the same evening of the incident after being located by police in Spirit Lake.
