A Couple of Area Schools Awarded Funds for Summer Meal Sites for Kids

A couple of area school districts will be getting part of 900 thousand dollars in competitive grants awarded by the Iowa Department of Education on Thursday to 38 districts to help more children and teens access nutritious meals and snacks during the summer months.

The Summer Food Service Program and Seamless Summer Option can be found in communities across Iowa. These sites provide nutritious meals and snacks to children in low-income areas during the summer months. Summer sites offer meals for all children and teens age 18 and under at no cost to families.

A grant to launch one or more summer meal sites have been awarded to schools including South O’Brien to set up a site at their elementary school, and the Spencer Community School District to set one up at the high school.
