(Spencer)-- An early morning fire today heavily damaged Spencer Livestock Sales on Highway 71 on the north edge of Spencer.
Spencer Fire Chief Jon Conyn talks about the blaze.
"Crews dispatched to the call were Spencer as well as Fostoria. Upon crews arrival noted fire on the B side or the south side of the structure. Crews went ahead and started making an offensive attack. Fostoria helped with a water shuttle due to not a hydrant, you know, right in the immediate area. We went ahead and just kept on going," stated Conyn.
He says the cause of the fire is undetermined as of now and is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office. Firefighters were on the scene until about 10:00 am. No injuries were reported.
"The fire did spread. We called out a second page for Everly as well for a water shuttle. The fire got under control around 4:00, we also had Clay county, 4:00 or 5:00 for, you know, getting the fire a little bit more under control and manageable. We had Clay County Roads come out with a track hoe as well for gaining access to the building. Crews were able to save the livestock barn area and working together in unison we were able to put a good halt on to it. But the show arena is a loss," said Conyn.
Conyn says one or two animals were in the building and that they were safely removed and are okay.
Damage to the building was estimated at $250,000.
