Two Hospitalized in Multi-Vehicle Crash in Storm Lake

Two individuals were hospitalized following a crash that involved three vehicles late Friday afternoon.

According the Storm Lake Public Safety, the incident occurred at the intersection of Erie and Railroad Streets shortly before 4:30pm on Friday. Upon arrival of police, they allegedly observed that a black Chevy sedan driven by 54-year-old Jeffrey Dewall of Storm Lake, that was traveling south on Erie Street, when Dewall suffered a suspected medical emergency. Dewall’s vehicle entered the intersection of East Railroad Street a struck a vehicle driven 50-year-old by Mit Lay of Storm Lake, which was traveling westbound on Railroad Street.

The collision caused Lay’s vehicle to overturn, trapping her inside of the vehicle. A third vehicle which was parked and unoccupied, owned by Trevor Johnson of Storm Lake, was also struck in the aftermath of the collision.

Responding officers found Dewall to be unconscious and immediately initiated first aid until paramedics arrived on scene. Dewall was treated by paramedics and transported by ambulance to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, where he was transferred by helicopter to Mercy One Medical Center in Sioux City.

Storm Lake Fire Fighters extricated Lay from her vehicle and she too was transported by ambulance to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Damage to the Dewall and Lay vehicles are estimated at 14-thousand dollars each. Damage to the Johnson vehicle is estimated at 10-thousand dollars.

The Storm Lake Police and Fire Departments were assisted at the scene by the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Department, BVRMC Paramedics, and the Storm Lake Street Department.
