Storm Lake Dog Park Discussed

July 12, 2019 9:52am

A dog park in Storm Lake... discussed for several years by the Mayor's Advisory Committee for Parks, Trails, and Urban Forrest... could be getting closer to reality.

Thursday afternoon, mayor Mike Porsch told the committee interest has been expressed in a donation of some land for a dog park. Although the city isn't ready to announced specifics, he says it's 2.2 acres of grassland in the city limits with access to water. City manager Keri Navratil says it's large enough for separate areas for large and small dogs, and room for parking. It would need to be fenced, and she estimates it would cost 30 to 50-thousand dollars for fencing and a parking area.

Porsch has researched other dog parks in the area... including an 11-acre site Spencer is developing, and a six-acre park in Spirit Lake. Other dog parks are in Sioux City, Denison, and Perry... largely developed through donations, although some grant dollars may also be available.

Porsch says if anyone is interested in helping develop a dog park in Storm Lake, they are asked to contact city hall.
