A teen was charged after Storm Lake Police around 1:43 this (Fri) morning took a report of a large fight that allegedly occurred in or near the Awaysis Park parking lot about an hour before the report was taken.
Police were advised that a 16-year-old male was visiting with some friends at Awaysis Park when several car loads of black males arrived at the park and confronted the 16-year-old and his friends. An alleged fight broke out and the 16-year-old male victim was physically assaulted and sustained a serious injury to his jaw.
Witnesses told police that during the altercation persons involved entered a vehicle owned by a third party and reportedly stole several items from the vehicle with a value in excess of eight-hundred dollars. The suspects then departed from the area. The victim and his friends drove around after the fight and eventually ended up at the Storm Lake Police Station to report the incident.
The 16-year-old victim was transported from the police station to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center by ambulance and was later transferred to a Sioux City medical center for treatment.
Police conducted a series of interviews and at approximately 3:00am located one of the suspects identified as a 16-year-old male of Storm Lake at a residence in the 1100 block of Erie Street. Police charged the 16 year old male with Burglary 3rd Degree, Rioting (both aggravated misdemeanors) and Disorderly Conduct (simple misdemeanor). He was processed and transported to the Youth Detention Facility in Cherokee, IA pending a court date.
The investigation is continuing and the Storm Lake Police Department is attempting to identify and locate several more persons involved in the incident. Anyone with information in connection with this event is asked to contact the Storm Lake Police Department at 712-732-8010.
