A Cherokee man who is accused of being involved in a deadly hit-and-run incident has pleaded not guilty.
29-year-old Casey Herwig is charged with one count of Knowingly Leaving The Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death. The charge stems from an incident that happened in Cherokee during the evening of December 26th of last year. Authorities reportedly received a call regarding a bicyclist laying in the roadway at the intersection of North 6th Street and West Willow. The bicyclist, identified as Phillip Watterson of Cherokee, died as a result of the hit-and-run.
According to an investigation, Herwig struck Watterson while driving a pickup. Authorities claim they discovered damage on the front of the pickup that matched parts at the accident scene. Herwig reportedly told authorities that he knew he hit something, but he wasn’t sure what is was. When Herwig was asked if he thought it was possible that he hit a person, he reportedly said that it “could’ve been.”
Herwig’s next court appearance hasn’t been scheduled.
