Charges have been filed against two juveniles in connection to a series of thefts that occurred last week in Storm Lake, which led to one of the juveniles getting struck by a vehicle.
Thefts reportedly occurred on three different occasions at Midtown Brew on East 5th Street during the overnight hours on May 15th, 17th, and 18th. In each incident, the two juvenile males allegedly stole a combined total of one-hundred dollars in liquor, and fled the scene on foot. Storm Lake Police today (Mon) issued referrals to both of the juveniles, ages 16 and 17, for three counts of 5th Degree Theft, a simple misdemeanor.
The 16-year-old was additionally charged in connection with a burglary to a motor vehicle that happened during the overnight hours of May 14th in the 400 block of East 3rd Street in Storm Lake. Police allege that during the hit and run accident that was reported in the early morning hours of last Thursday, May 18th, officers witnessed the 16-year-old in possession of the stolen items from the burglary. The 16-year-old was additionally charged with 3rd Degree Burglary, an aggravated misdemeanor, and was eventually transported to the Cherokee Youth Emergency Services Center. The 17-year-old was referred to BV County Juvenile Court and released to a parent.
The 17-year-old was hospitalized after he was hit by an SUV while he was on the sidewalk in the early morning hours of May 18th. Later that day, the driver was located and identified as 27-year-old Gerson Barrionuavo-Corbonel of Lakeside. An investigation by Storm Lake Police determined that Barrionuavo-Corbonel was working as a clerk at the Midtown store when the theft occurred in the early morning hours on May 18th. He left the store, followed the 17-year-old in his vehicle, and drove the vehicle off the road and into a yard at 810 East 5th Street where he struck the teen. Barrionuavo-Corbonel then fled the scene in the vehicle.
Barrionuavo-Corbonel received multiple charges, and was booked into the BV County Jail on a 36-hundred dollar bond.
